30 Days of Shakespeare - Day 5
Jul. 22nd, 2010 07:24 pmDay #5 - Your Favourite Villain
Richard III! I love Richard III. I love how completely shameless he is. I love how he totally makes the audience complicit in his evil. I love how good an actor he is. He walks up to some people and goes "Ow! That witch withered my arm!" and even though they KNOW absolutely that it isn't true, that he's lying, they end up believing him. I love that in a lot of ways, he's a medieval demon and he wouldn't be out of place bouncing around in the audience farting fireworks. And I dearly love Antony Sher's book Year of the King in which he details the process by which he created his version of Richard for the RSC.
