May. 17th, 2008 05:38 pmOMG SOMEONE TURN DOWN THE HEAT. It's been over 100 for two days and it's gonna stay that way for a bit. It's awful. Especially hauling book drop carts across the parking lot. Metal cart. Metal book drop. Black asphalt. Make it STOP.
On to happier things. This week has been Children's Book Week! (I only found out today and it ends tomorrow. Poo. I work at a frakkin' library, you'd think we'd post these things...) Since I didn't know and it's an arbitrarily chosen week anyway, I proclaim this week my Children's Book Week! It's especially appropriate since I have spent time recently talking to friends about books we read as kids. I find it really interesting the books each of us feel are staples that others don't even recognize. But...but...doesn't everyone know them? Anyway, I will post about one or two children's books or authors everyday that I feel are necessities of the children's library. Feel free to debate, add to the list, toss your favourites up on your LJs and in general discuss the texts (and pictures) that shaped you when you were young!
Today:
Sandra Boynton
Possibly my favourite children's book author of all time. Sandra Boynton is an illustrator of primarily (entirely?) animals of a somewhat cartoony variety. Her work ranges from board books to adult novelty books to imaginary musicals (featuring real CDs with the most amazing casts...) and it's all awesome. Among my favourites:

The Going to Bed Book
About a crew of animals on a boat, preparing to go to bed. My mother always complains about the fact that the animals take their bath and THEN go exercise. May well be my favourite Boynton of all.

But Not the Hippopotamus
Many pairs of animals are prancing about doing fun things, but not the hippopotamus. Poor hippo. Sandra Boynton's work often centers around hippopotami, one of the things I love most about her. She once had a calendar that was entirely pictoral hippopotamus puns. Hippopotamuse: Hippo of inspiration. Hippopotenuse: the longest side of a hippopotamus right triangle...Awesome.

Chocolate: A Consuming Passion
Isn't technically a children's book, but it's GOOD. Turns out, hippos really like chocolate...Om nom nom.

Grunt: Pigorian Chant from Snouto Domoinko de Silo
It's a CD of Gregorian chant style music. All in...PIG LATIN.

Philadelphia Chickens: An Imaginary Musical Revue
Chicken kick line. Snuggle puppy. Aardvark barbershop quartet. Cast includes the Bacon brothers, Meryl Streep, Laura Linney, Scott Bakula, Patti LuPone, and Natasha Richardson. Seriously.

Dog Train: A Wild Ride on the Rock and Roll Side
Blues Traveler. Alison Krauss. The O.K. Chorale. Hootie and the Blowfish. And really all I should have to say... a duet called "I Need a Nap" sung by Kate Winslet and Weird Al Yankovic. Have you bought it yet?

Blue Moo: 17 Jukebox Hits from Way Back Never
Diner music. Like 50s and 60s diners. B.B.King. Patti LuPone. Brian Wilson. Neil Sadaka. Sha Na Na. Bobby Vee. Seriously, this woman is a genius.
Other titles include:
Yay, You!: Moving Out, Moving Up, Moving On
Consider Love: Its Moods and Many Ways
Moo, Baa, La La La
Dinosaur's Binkit
What's Wrong, Little Pookie
Gopher Baroque
Bob the Christmas Reindeer and Other Stories
Snoozers
Barnyard Dance!
Your Personal Penguin (instructions for download of Davy Jones of the Monkees singing the song incl.)
Also, the wallpaper border in my room is primary colored balloons held by Boynton animals. And the best thing I got for my birthday last year? Was a plushie Boynton hippo. He's Sensitive. It says so on his tag. My father calls it neurotic. I think we do well together.
