Sometimes, the government's timing is just exactly wrong. My Comm paper of DOOM, about Adult Literacy, is due Wednesday, December 14. The government is releasing the first new National Adult Literacy Assessment in more than ten years. On Thursday, December 15.

so put that as an addendum to your paper. something like "the results of this paper prove inconclusive in the face of new data which is available on the 15th of december 2005."

at least you'll get points for noting that yes, you looked for the data and even would have had good data--but the timing was off.

The numbers on functional illiteracy are staggering. Upwards of 5% of adults nationally can't read, write, or perform basic math.

60% of the prison population isn't though, neither are 85% of juvenile offenders, which should tell us something...
