The obligatory Tony post.
I'm surprised, I'm thrilled, I'm excited, I want to marry Hugh Jackman. Yep, that sums it up.
Major, major surprises (I'm assuming that since the telecast has now finished across the US I can just discuss it without worrying about spoilers)

I fully expected the more commercially successful, marketable musical to win. It's true, I love Wicked, I think it's absolutely lovely. However, I think Avenue Q is better, I think it makes more of a statement, I think it has a more original, innovative concept, and I think it's a crying shame that there was no Tony to nominate Rick Lyon for, for his amazing puppet design (by the way, the bit with Hugh and John/Rod was fan-fucking-tastic, I nearly cried) I'm deeply impressed by the courage of Tony voters in awarding each of the Best Show/Best Revival Tonys to shows that make strong political and social statements.
In the acting categories, the young woman, Anika Noni Rose, who won for Caroline, or Change was lovely, but I don't know much about her. I was rooting for Karen Ziemba who I've seen and know to be a fabulous dancer.
I think Michael Cerveris was a wonderful choice for featured Actor in a Musical. I just pout because his part was originally supposed to be played by Doug Sills.
Yay Audra McDonald! Ten years, five noms, four wins, how's that for a gorgeous track record?
Had no opinion whatsoever on featured Actor in a Play, congratulations to Brian O'Byrne for his win.
Phylicia Rashad was lovely, graceful, and well-spoken, it was a pleasure to listen to her.
Very pleased that the entire cast of I Am My Own Wife won. I had thought Kevin Kline, but Jefferson Mays really has a much bigger burden to bear in his role. That was an extremely distinguished group of actors, it was a good year for actors this year. (Also for puppets, given Avenue Q and Little Shop...
As for Idina, many, MANY congratulations to her, she's gorgeous and talented and absolutely deserving. I was surprised, pundits have been pointing at Donna Murphy since the noms came out and I figured she'd win because Kristin and Idina would split the Wicked vote, so there you are.
Oh my goodness HUGH! Can we get rid of his wife please so I can marry him? Fabulous. Great hosting job, big change from here:

to here:

Though I adore John Tartaglia and would gladly bear his children (yet more proof that all that great ones are gay), I don't think anyone deserved it more than Hugh, he just sparkles in so many ways. And the bit with Sarah Jessica Parker, oh the joy and rapture! Squeeeeeeeee! For those who missed it...

So much mutant happiness...

Other Tony notes...
Though I think Avenue Q was completely deserving of the Best Book of a Musical award, I admit I was rooting for Wicked, because it was written by the mother of a friend and I wanted to see Savannah on TV! (Lucky brat got to go to the Tonys and sit with all the wonderful theatre people...)
So, thrills, and chills, and little pink pills. If I stay up, there will be Tony icons tonight, otherwise it'll wait 'till tomorrow (*Sniff* Last day at home before I start work. Gakk.)

So, fellow Tonyians...

Good night.

I Cannot Hide What I Am

I must be sad when I have cause and smile
at no man's jests, eat when I have stomach and wait
for no man's leisure, sleep when I am drowsy and
tend on no man's business, laugh when I am merry and
claw no man in his humour...
I had rather be a canker in a hedge than a rose in
his grace, and it better fits my blood to be
disdained of all than to fashion a carriage to rob
love from any: in this, though I cannot be said to
be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied
but I am a plain-dealing villain. I am trusted with
a muzzle and enfranchised with a clog; therefore I
have decreed not to sing in my cage. If I had my
mouth, I would bite; if I had my liberty, I would do
my liking: in the meantime let me be that I am and
seek not to alter me.
