Way back in the mists of time, in the late 1970s, the very first slash pairing ever was Kirk and Spock of the original Star Trek series, in typed and photocopied or even hectographed old fanzines that got sold at conventions.

That was the first slash I ever read, in 1995 or so, when there barely was and Internet yet. And the first slash I ever wrote, even before that, when I had only heard that there was such a thing as fanfic, and slash, and wanted to experiment with the concept; it's here now:

Um, no, I don't. Generally, Gay of the Day tends to be about the queer community in some way, not about fandom. And slash, for the most part, is written by heterosexual women and doesn't tend to do a lot in favor of queer issues. In fact, lots of people don't like slash *because* it's so blatantly exploiting gays, especially by people who aren't part of the community to begin with.

Gabrielle and Xena made me a bit squeamish, too, as it was never actually a canon relationship on the show. Yes, the producers have admitted to playing with subtext, but it was never actually stated that yes, they do girl sex now. But I didn't say anything.

Also, fandom tends to be kept on the down low, and there are plenty of people who prefer to keep it there, myself included. Yeah, I'm all Miss Fandom on LJ, but that's entirely separate from my life on campus, especially as a member of B-GLAD.

If you must, chalk it up to me being way anal and having really specific opinions about what the calendar should be, and now that I'm not in charge of it or even part of it, it's drastically different. But frankly, I'm glad this one will only be up for a day and on a Sunday. Is all I'm sayin'.

And people being pissed at me can now commence.

I don't entirely disagree.
fandom is pretty personal, and while there are a select few gay men in slash fandoms... they're a select few.
It just isn't... a gay thing, I suppose.

I Cannot Hide What I Am

I must be sad when I have cause and smile
at no man's jests, eat when I have stomach and wait
for no man's leisure, sleep when I am drowsy and
tend on no man's business, laugh when I am merry and
claw no man in his humour...
I had rather be a canker in a hedge than a rose in
his grace, and it better fits my blood to be
disdained of all than to fashion a carriage to rob
love from any: in this, though I cannot be said to
be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied
but I am a plain-dealing villain. I am trusted with
a muzzle and enfranchised with a clog; therefore I
have decreed not to sing in my cage. If I had my
mouth, I would bite; if I had my liberty, I would do
my liking: in the meantime let me be that I am and
seek not to alter me.
